2020 Covering the News in a Big City - Session description: Practicing visual journalism in a big city has changed dramatically. It now requires the journalists to possess multiple skills to complete a full package. News organizations are upping the ante, squeezeing out as much content they can from individuals who now take photos, produce video, and even write the story. How do you navigate this new frontier?
CMA National College Media Convention New York City 2010-2020 & Philadelphia - 2018 Evolving visual journalism - Taking photos and covering the news in a big city has changed dramatically over the years and now requires the visual journalist to possess multiple skills to get the job done. Publishers and news organizations are constantly upping the ante seeking to squeeze out as much content they can from each individual - reporters now take photos, photographers do video, and some journalists take photos, do video and write the story! Being a visual journalist is becoming more challenging and takes really special training - the cost of which is almost never taken into consideration by employers who either would rather use individuals as freelancers or use them as staff without proper benefits.
